Design Tips

Below is a built in alcove bookcase with a custom made cabinet below a worktop. Move your mouse or cursor over it to see the some highlighted parts, these parts are the details that can be changed to suit your style.

Below are some questions to think about when designing your furniture.

Crown Moulding

Top of the furniture. Finishing the top of the furniture tops it off and can make the alcove unit a standout piece of furniture.

Corner Moulding

The meeting of two pieces, the facia trim and the crown moulding can be nicely joined by using a standout corner moulding, very useful if your facia trim and crown moulding are two different styles.

Facia / Trim

Some walls are not perfectly plump / straight. Using a facia trim helps keep a straight eye-line to the sides of the bookshelves whilst smoothing out any wonky older characterful walls.

How many shelves? Having a think about what you want to be displaying, special ornaments, DVD's or books. The shelve edges can be routed with round edges or left square or have more decorative trims added.

Shelf Supports

Adjustable shelves or fixed. If you know what you are going to display on your shelves make sure you leave the correct space between fixed shelves. Adjustable shelves will give you more flexibility for a little more cost.

Back Board

T&G (tongue and groove) backboard or the wall. The back of the shelves can be lined with different coverings including T&G boards/sheets and this can hide electric and entertainment cables if you like. The back also be covered with mirror.

Finish of the worktop, can be timber and stained. Using a different colour worktop can really make it standout, or use a stone worktop.

Handles galore. There is a huge variety of handle styles to choose from. It's also important to have a think about where to place the handles, near the top, near the middle, a quarter way down.

Doors, surface or in-frame. Door can also be sliding if the space is needed. Round shapes on doors can look fabulous too.

Cabinet Frame

In-frame or surface mounted. This is another space where electric and entertainment cables can be hidden.

The storage unit, does it need a shelf inside or it may be used as a wine / bottles storage space.

The finish, painted or not, same colour as the walls or a contrasting colour, or even multicoloured. Get your bespoke alcove bookcase made how you want.

“Conrad really helped me out in January following a damp proofing course to repair skirting boards, mount two sets of shelves and refit some doors. He was reliable, hard working and managed to fit around my busy schedule. The job was done to a good standard and I would happily call on his services again.”
